Invasive Plants: English Ivy Replacements

Last month I wrote, “Invasive Species and Why They are a Threat,” and about, “Invasive Species Awareness Week Activities for Kids at the U.S. Botanic Garden.”

One of the most prominent invasive plant species in the DC Metro area is English Ivy. It can be seen everywhere: in neighborhoods, intentionally planted as ground cover (now gone wild), along roadways, where it has over taken trees and natural habitats, and in our parks.

Thanks to the Virginia Native Plant Society Potowmack Chapter, here is a list of Alternatives to English Ivy. The document includes information about alternative plants for various types of habitats and offers tips for how to get started in removing English Ivy.

Enjoy!
