Visit One Planet — Ours!
by ~ September 24th, 2008. Filed under: Eco-Active Activities, Family Fun.If you haven’t already done so, take a couple of hours to visit the US Botanic Garden in downtown DC, which is currently featuring One Planet — Ours! Sustainability for the 22nd Century. The exhibit focuses on “sustainability — not only how it applies to gardens and landscapes, but also how each of us can live our lives as if our future depended on it.” The exhibit features numerous examples of steps individuals can take to have a long term impact. It also features more than 40 sculptures offering “whole-earth” solutions to global warming.
The exhibit and the gardens are so wonderful that we’ve visited twice recently! This is one place where the kids never seem to get bored. Throughout there are elements to engage each of the senses and draw connections between us and the earth.
For a fun time with the family, arrive around 9:45 on a Saturday or Sunday morning for the 10am opening, park on the street virtually in front of the center and enjoy a low-traffic stroll through the gardens. Top it off with a picnic lunch in the outdoor gardens or on the patio, complete with tables and umbrellas. Oh, and don’t forget the hands-on children’s garden.
The exhibit runs through October 13th. Details: http://www.usbg.gov/education/events/One-Planet-Ours.cfm
